Which Round Should I Apply In - Round 1 or Round 2?

Which Round Should I Apply In – Round 1 or Round 2?

One of the most common questions we get from MBA applicants is:

"Which round should I apply in – Round 1 or Round 2?"

The answer, as with most things in the MBA admissions process, is: it depends.

In this blog, I aim to clarify the differences between Round 1 and Round 2 and help you decide which round is right for you. If you ask me whether Round 1 is better than Round 2, my answer would be a simple yes—but only if your application is ready.

For overrepresented candidates, we generally recommend applying in Round 1 whenever possible.

The reasons are fairly straightforward:

  1. More seats are available

  2. Competition is typically lower

  3. Scholarship opportunities are often greater

Round 1 generally attracts candidates who have prepared well in advance. While the quality of applicants is often strong, the overall volume of applications is usually lower than in Round 2. As a result, some schools may see slightly better acceptance rates during the first round.

Another important advantage is that Round 1 marks the beginning of the admissions cycle. Admissions committees are building their incoming class from scratch and every seat is still available. If your application stands out, you may have a higher chance of securing an interview invite before the class starts taking shape.

There is also the scholarship factor. Many schools allocate a significant portion of their scholarship budget in the earlier rounds. By Round 2, some of these funds may already have been awarded, which can limit the number and size of scholarships available. For international applicants, an earlier admission decision also provides more time for financial planning, visa processing, accommodation arrangements, and relocation logistics.

Having said that, there is one point that applicants should never forget - A strong Round 2 application will always have a better chance than a rushed and average Round 1 application.

If you believe your application will be significantly stronger by waiting a few more months, then Round 2 may be the better choice. Most leading MBA programs continue to admit a large number of candidates in Round 2. However, this round typically attracts the highest volume of applications. While the number of offers extended may be similar to Round 1, the level of competition is often much higher.

Therefore, if an additional three to four months can help you improve your GMAT or GRE score, strengthen your leadership stories, gain meaningful professional achievements, refine your career goals, or craft stronger essays, waiting until Round 2 can be a smart strategic decision.

The key question you should ask yourself is: "Will my application be materially stronger if I apply in Round 2 instead of Round 1?"

If the answer is yes, then waiting may be worthwhile.

Hence, if your profile is already competitive and your application is ready, there is rarely a better time to apply than Round 1. However, if you genuinely believe that a few additional months will allow you to present a stronger and more compelling application, then Round 2 remains an excellent option.

At the end of the day, admissions committees do not reward candidates simply for applying early. They reward candidates who present the strongest version of themselves. And that is ultimately how you should decide which round is right for you.
